| Owned by Dana Gallo Strayton, a highly experienced chef, restaurateur and catering management executive, the Prince Street Cafe & Bakery was a natural progression for this highly entrepreneurial professional. Originally from the North End of Boston, Mrs. Strayton’s family has been in the restaurant and bakery business for over 100 years. Her great-grandfather was the owner of Stella’s Restaurant in Boston, her grandfather, John “Costantino” Plescia, owned Prince Pastry Shop in Boston’s North End. Dana’s father, John Gallo, owned Luigi’s Restaurant on Broad Street in Boston and her family owned G’Vanni’s Restaurant in the North End in the space formally occupied by their grandfather’s pastry shop. Dana began her culinary career in her grandfather’s pastry shop, later worked in her father’s restaurant, and while attending Boston University, managed G’Vanni’s. After graduation Dana then went to Florida to open Galleria G’Vanni a 250-seat restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, where she was responsible for hiring, menu development and once open, day-to-day management of the restaurant. After two years in Florida, Dana returned to Boston again managing G’Vanni’s North End location while attending graduate school at Boston University, graduating with a Master’s Degree in Marketing. Dana then joined a public relations firm in Boston where she managed the media services department, working closely with members of the press and facilitating corporate events for client companies. After meeting a Boston caterer during a client event, Mrs. Strayton was hired by him to facilitate sales, expand marketing and business development and to manage events. Of course with Dana’s culinary experience, refined taste and cooking skills, she was soon in the commissary cooking for many of the events too. Dana then joined Wolfgang Puck Catering as it expanded into Boston as Director of Catering. In that role she was responsible for sales and account management overseeing events from inception to completion, arranging the myriad details that form a complete event. In that role Dana managed a staff of 130 and ran events ranging from 100 to over 1,500 guests. But with her family's strong entrepreneurial spirit and a successful career as a well-respected PR manager, and catering chef and executive, she began to provide personal chef services in individual's homes. A natural outgrowth of her personal chef services and her catering experience, Dana opened DGS Catering to offer her delicious and artful food to a broader audience. Dana has traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe enjoying and learning a broad variety of regional and ethnic specialties. For the past 8 years Dana has run a successful and acclaimed catering company that counts among its clients Kraft Foods, Microsoft, Fidelity Investments, Atlas Venture, Peabody Properties, McKinsey & Co., Progress Software, Mellic, Porter & Shea and a host of individuals and non-profit organizations. Dana opened Prince Street Cafe & Bakery in 2011, a storefront retail bakery and café located in historic Bedford, MA., where she serves as Executive Pastry Chef making her grandfather’s North End recipes. |
